Career and Technical Education (CTE)

The Career and Technical Education (CTE) certificate is a classroom teaching certificate that authorizes individuals to teach a specific career and technical education subject area in grades 7-12 in a 51³Ô¹ÏÍø State public school or BOCES. CTE courses and programs are designed to prepare high school students to enter occupational fields such as dental assisting, plumbing, electrical, cosmetology, culinary, and vehicle maintenance. CTE certificate requirements place an emphasis on occupational work experience and related education in the subject area of the certificate, providing certificate holders with the expertise needed to teach a specific trade or technical field to students.

Career and Technical Education Courses that Teachers Who Do Not Hold a CTE Certificate Can Teach

Teachers who hold the Agriculture, Business and Marketing, or Family and Consumer Sciences classroom teaching certificate can teach the following career and technical education (CTE) introductory courses in an approved CTE program or an approved CTE approved course in lieu of holding the specific CTE subject area certificate title.

  • Agriculture- Agriculture certificate holders are certified to teach coursework in agriculture production, science, and business, agricultural mechanics, animal science and management, plant science and horticulture, natural resources and conservation, and related courses.   • Business and Marketing- Business and marketing certificate holders are certified to teach coursework in finances, business management and administration, business information technology, and marketing.   • Family and Consumer Sciences- Family and consumer sciences certificate holders are certified to teach coursework in culinary, food and nutrition, hospitality and tourism, human services, education, textile and design, and related courses.
