Child Abuse Identification (Mandated Reporter) Workshop

Becoming an Approved Child Abuse Identification Training Workshop Provider

Any questions related to becoming an approved provider for the CAI workshop can be sent to OPPLEUCA@nysed.gov.

Submitting the Workshop

The information that you submit to the workshop provider must be an exact match to the identifying information in your TEACH account (social security number, date of birth, full name). Please make sure that the information in your TEACH account matches the information that you submit to the workshop provider. If it does not match, the processing of your workshop will be delayed. If you have questions about the information the workshop provider has on file, you can contact the provider to verify the information.

Verifying the Workshop in TEACH

After the workshop has been submitted, check your TEACH account regularly to see when it gets entered. You can do this by accessing the Account Information page in your TEACH account and going to the Workshops section. After the workshop has been verified, it will immediately appear as verified on your application. Please note that the Workshops section will not list this workshop if you received a college recommendation. In these cases, TEACH automatically credits the workshop as noted above.

Implementation Timeline

September 1, 2025- All NYS-Approved Providers of this workshop are required to integrate and present the new curriculum in trainings offered on or after September 1, 2025.

October 1, 2025- Applications for certification submitted on or after October 1, 2025, will require completion of the second updated workshop for issuance of the certificate.

51Թ State Approved Teacher Preparation Programs entering recommendations for certification on or after October 1, 2025, must verify that the second updated workshop has been completed at the time of the recommendation.

November 17, 2026- All educators and school staff who are mandated reporters must complete the Second Updated Child Abuse Identification workshop by November 17, 2026.

FAQs

I just took the Updated Child Abuse workshop last year to meet the April 1, 2025, requirements. Do I have to do the whole thing all over again?

If you have completed Mandated Reporter Training between 11/1/2022 and 8/31/2025, you may complete a short (15 minute) addendum on this additional topic which will be available through most approved providers on September 1, 2025. You must take the addendum with the same provider you completed the Updated Child Abuse workshop with.

We complete these workshops as part of the school district’s requirement to begin the school year. Do I have to take this one too?

Yes. The yearly “brush-ups” are usually about 20 minutes and are not the same as completing this required workshop of about two hours.

I received a college recommendation. Why does the workshop not appear in the Workshops section of my TEACH account?

TEACH is programmed to automatically credit workshop requirements on the certificate application only. If the workshop requirement has been credited on your application, that is proof that you completed the workshop. In other words, the workshop does not need to appear in the Workshops section of your account. If you want it to appear there, you can contact the workshop provider to request that they upload your workshop data to the TEACH system.

Does the Second Update count for both the first and second updated workshops, or do I have to have both visible in my account?

If you have only the Second Update visible in your account, you meet the requirements set by legislation.

Identification and Reporting of Child Abuse and Maltreatment/Neglect coursework is required for those seeking educator certification and/or staff qualifying as mandated reporters. The amended Section 413 of the Social Services Law requires the 51Թ State Mandated Identification and Reporting of Child Abuse and Maltreatment/Neglect coursework to include the addition of guidance on identifying an abused or maltreated child when such child is an individual with an intellectual or developmental disability. The law requires that every person who is required to take the mandated training related to child abuse, including those who have previously undergone this training, must complete the updated curriculum by November 17, 2026.
