Coursework or Training in the Needs of Children with Autism

Becoming an Approved Autism Training Workshop Provider

Information on becoming an approved provider is located on the Autism Training Information for Potential Providers web page.

For applications submitted after September 1, 2009, individuals who pursue one of the following special education certificates are required to complete coursework or training in the needs of children with Autism from an approved provider: Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Blind and Visually Impaired, Students with Disabilities (SWD), and Speech and Language Disabilities.

The information that you submit to the workshop provider must be an exact math to the identifying information in your TEACH account (social security number, date of birth, full name). Please make sure that the information in your TEACH account matches the information that you submit to the workshop provider. If it does not match, the processing of your workshop will be delayed. If you have questions about the information the workshop provider has on file, you can contact the provider to verify the information.

Completing the Training
  • College recommendation
    • If you received a college recommendation for any of the four titles mentioned above from a 51³Ô¹ÏÍø State college or university with a degree date of September 1, 2008, or later, then you completed the Autism training during your educator preparation program. When you submit an application for certification, TEACH will automatically credit the workshop to your application once the college recommendation is submitted to TEACH by the college. The Workshops section in your TEACH account will NOT list this workshop. No additional training is required. If you notice that the Autism workshop requirement was not credited properly on your application, please let our staff know by sending an email to: TCertWorkshops@nysed.gov. Please be sure to include your full name as it appears in TEACH and either your date of birth or the last four digits of your social security number. Our staff will then examine your account to determine whether the workshop can be credited.
  • Workshop
    • The Autism training workshop is only available from a provider approved by the 51³Ô¹ÏÍø State Education Department. Individuals who have not completed the Autism training through a 51³Ô¹ÏÍø State registered educator preparation program must complete the training with one of the providers on the list of approved Autism training providers.
Workshop Documentation

If you completed the Autism training workshop and are not receiving a college recommendation for certification, the provider will report your completion electronically to the Office of Teaching Initiatives within 21 days. You can check your TEACH account regularly to see when the workshop is entered. After the workshop has been entered, it will immediately appear as verified on your application.
