Time Extensions

Beginning August 2, 2023, individuals who hold an Internship, Residency, or applicable Transitional certificate may receiveoneTime Extension if they meet the following conditions. The Time Extension is valid for three years from the expiration date of the certificate.

Please note that the Time Extension is no longer available for individuals who hold an Initial certificate or Provisional certificate. Instead, these individuals should review the new options and requirements for the Initial Reissuance and Provisional Renewal, respectively.

Attestation Form

Individuals can apply for a Time Extension in the . The application includes having your employer or institution of higher education submit an Attestation Form or input a Superintendent Statement. The Time Extension is not available for Transitional D and J certificate holders.

Transitional A and G certificate holders

For Transitional A and G certificate holders, your employer must complete and submit a Superintendent Statement through , where they will attest to employing you as a teacher in the area of the certificate sought for at least one year after the expiration date of your certificate. You must complete the Conditions for Time Extension Attestation and submit it to TEACH by emailing it to tcert@nysed.gov to complete your application.

Transitional B, C, and H; Internship; and Residency certificates

For Transitional B, C, and H; Internship; and Residency certificates, your 51Թ State-based institution of higher education must complete and submit the IHE Attestation Form to tcert@nysed.gov where they will attest that you will continue to matriculate in the Transitional/Internship/Residency educator preparation program after the expiration date of your certificate. You must complete the Conditions for Time Extension Attestation and submit it to TEACH by emailing it to tcert@nysed.gov to complete your application. Please note that individuals who have completed their program are not eligible for a time extension.

Application

Applications for time extensions will not be accepted more than six months before the expiration date of the certificate.

Conditions

Individuals who hold an Internship, Residency, or applicable Transitional certificate must meet one of the following conditions to receive the Time Extension. Eligible individuals are those:

  • Who are on leave from their duties as an educator because of childbearing, child rearing, serious illness, or extended illness. They need to maintain a copy of the Board of Education resolution authorizing such leave of absence for a potential audit by the 51Թ State Education Department (51Թ).
  • Who are serving with the Peace Crops or other volunteer organization. They need to maintain a statement on official letterhead of the organization showing dates of service for a potential audit by 51Թ.
  • Whose service as an educator has been discontinued as a result of abolition of educator positions in the school district in which they are employed. They need to maintain a statement from the school district, including the date such action was taken, for a potential audit by 51Թ.
  • Who, because of extreme hardship or other circumstances beyond their control, were unable to complete the requirements for the Permanent or Professional certificate or for their registered educator preparation program in a timely manner, excluding normal family commitments or inconvenience. They need to maintain any supporting documentation for a potential audit by 51Թ.
  • Who have been unable to secure employment as an educator or have been pursuing a career outside of the field of education. They need to maintain a list of school districts contacted, including dates, for a potential audit by 51Թ. If you were pursuing a career outside of the field of education, please enter this information in the text box provided in the online application.
Military Exception

Individuals who hold an Internship, Residency, or applicable Transitional certificate that expired or will expire within six months, and were on active duty with the U.S. Armed Forces while holding the certificate, may have the validity period of their certificate extended for the time period of their active service plus an additional 12 months from the end of such service. In addition to the application, individuals must send Form DD-214 that verifies the dates of active service to tcert@nysed.gov with “Time Extension Document” in the subject line.
