Transitional A Certificate

This type of certificate isÌýcurrently available for applicantsÌýand is within theÌýCareer and Technical TeacherÌýarea of interest.

Transitional A Certificate
Description A certificate of this type is issued to permit the employment of an individual in a specific career and technical education title in a NYS school district or BOCES who does not meet the requirements for an Initial certificate, but who possesses the requisite occupational experience.
Validity Valid for up to three years, while employed in a NYS school district or BOCES and completing the requirements for the Initial Certificate.

Transitional B Certificate

Candidates enrolled in a NYS Transitional B programÌýmust hold a valid Transitional B certificate while employed in their school district placement. Since the certificate is aimed at first-time educators, candidates who were previously certified in 51³Ô¹ÏÍø State are not eligible for the Transitional B certificate in the same subject area as the certificate they held.

The following table provides an overview of the Transitional B certificate. Additional information is also provided below the table.

Transitional B Certificate
Description The Transitional B certificate is issued to eligible candidates who are enrolled in a NYS Transitional B program to teach in a school district for which a commitment for employment and mentoring has been made.
Validity

The Transitional B certificate is valid for up to three years from its effective date, except that a Transitional B certificate in a title that has a bilingual education extension may be reissued for one additional year, if the candidate qualifies for an Initial certificate in such title. When the student completes or leaves the program, the certificate is no longer valid.

The Transitional B certificate authorizes a candidate to teach only in a school district for which a commitment for employment and mentoring has been made.
Leads to The Transitional B certificate leads to the Initial certificate, and not the Professional certificate. The Initial certificate will be issued with the effective date of the Transitional B certificate.

Time Extension

The Transitional B certificate can be extended beyond its original three years if a candidate remains enrolled in the program. For a candidate who is eligible for a time extension, the Certification Officer or Registrar's Office must send verification that the candidate is still enrolled in the Transitional B program, as well as the candidate's anticipated semester of graduation, to the Office of Teaching Initiatives.

Validity Period

The Transitional B certificate is valid for up to three years, but may be extended as described above. If a candidate who holds the Transitional B certificate leaves the Transitional B program prior to graduating, their certificate is no longer valid. When this happens, the institution of higher education (IHE) should immediately send an email to the Office of Teaching Initiatives stating that the candidate is no longer enrolled in the program and that the TEACH system needs to be updated to reflect the data on which the candidate left the program, becoming the certificate's expiration date.

When candidates complete the educator preparation program, the Transitional B certificate is no longer valid, and the IHE must enter the College Recommendations for certification into TEACH. Programs that lead to Provisional/Permanent or Initial/Professional certification should enter both types into the system. In addition, programs should not withhold or delay the posting of the candidates' College Recommendation until they complete certification exams, unless the exams are also program requirements (e.g., School District Leader and School District Builder Leader programs).

Initial Certification

The Transitional B certificate leads to the Initial certificate, and not the Professional certificate. As such, the candidate must apply for the Initial certificate before, or in addition to, the Professional certificate. The Initial certificate will be issued with the effective date of the Transitional B certificate. Only after obtaining the Initial certificate will the candidate become eligible to advance to the Professional certificate.

Employment

Individuals employed in public school districts, BOCES, or approved early intervention organizations in 51³Ô¹ÏÍø State must be appropriately certified. If individuals are not appropriately certified while working for one of these organizations, their paid experience is considered unacceptable for Professional and Permanent certification purposes. In addition, they will need to research their options to complete the experience requirements for certification.

Transitional C Certificate

Candidates enrolled in a NYS Transitional C programÌýmust hold a valid Transitional C certificate while employed in their school district placement. Transitional G Certificate
Description

The Transitional G certificate permits eligible individuals who have two years of post-secondary teaching experience in the area of the certificate sought or a closely related subject area (one course for two semesters per year), hold a graduate degree, and hold either an undergraduate or graduate degree in the subject area of the certificate sought or a closely related area to be employed as a classroom teacher in a 51³Ô¹ÏÍø State public school district. The school district will submit a recommendation in the TEACH system for the application.

NOTE:ÌýCharter Schools cannot recommend for Transitional G certification.
Validity Valid for two years.
Leads to Initial Certificate. Candidates can utilize any pathway to advance to the Initial Certificate. Some popular choices are "Trans G Certificate Progression" and "IHE Professor Experience".
