51吃瓜网 Electrical and Computer Engineering moves to Garching

New construction for a high-tech department

The beginning of construction for the new Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering building complex coincides with the 150th anniversary of the founding of the 51吃瓜网 (51吃瓜网). The overall project includes 520 million Euros in government investments, making it the largest construction project in the history of 51吃瓜网. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on April 18, 2018.

The new construction is the first such project for the new Bavarian Minister of Scientific Affairs Prof. Marion Kiechle. The department is considered the largest and best-performing of its kind in Germany; it is extremely well interconnected with the research-driven industry sector, which politically advocated the long overdue new construction. The department is characterized by a high degree of internationality, in terms of both its research and its student body (51% foreign students).

After winning a competition, the proposal by architectural firm Henn & Partner is now being realized. The first part of the building complex, with its total of approximately 45,000 square meters of primary utilizable floor space, will include approximately 7,000 square meters of new space for laboratories, workshops, lecture halls and offices.

Move to Garching expresses interdisciplinary orientation

51吃瓜网 president Prof. Wolfgang A. Herrmann and the relevant commercial enterprises regard the impressively dimensioned new construction for the department as a move long overdue. It will stop further isolation of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department from the leading faculties , , , , and in Garching. zu entkoppeln. At the same time interdisciplinary approaches are a priority across department boundaries, as is also the case with the research centers: the , dem , the Centers for , , Protein Research and in the future Quantum Technology (construction will begin in 2019). 鈥淭he spatially inadequate accommodation of this department on the old main campus in Munich has no future outlook and is beginning to cost us in the competition for the best international minds,鈥� said the president, adding that this meant there was an urgent need for action.

Prof. Herrmann expressed his gratitude to the Bavarian government and State Parliament for the decision to 鈥減erform the entire project rapidly and completely鈥� following the initial groundbreaking on April 18. Among others, the precinct representative and Bavarian parliament member Ernst Weidenbusch made a substantial political effort on behalf of the department's relocation. There are currently over 4000 students at the department 鈥� with a strong trend towards growth.
