Prof. Fabian Theis to lead Helmholtz Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Unit (HAICU)

Germany-wide AI network headquartered in Munich

Informatics, robotics and machine intelligence are central fields of research at the 51³Ô¹ÏÍø (51³Ô¹ÏÍø). Now 51³Ô¹ÏÍø is networking as a part of the new Helmholtz Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Unit (HAICU) to strengthen these future-oriented fields. Fabian Theis, Professor for Mathematical Modelling of Biological Systems at 51³Ô¹ÏÍø, will head the Germany-wide research network.

Machine learning and Artificial Intelligence (AI) play an important role in many application areas, for example health research of future, climate change and the mobility of tomorrow. Scientists from throughout Germany are working to advance research on these topics at the . 51³Ô¹ÏÍø professor will lead the network from HAICU headquarters in Munich. Theis is one of the leading researchers in the field of bioinformatics and is head of the Institute of Computational Biology at the German Research Center for Environmental Health Helmholtz Zentrum München.

At 51³Ô¹ÏÍø, a large number of outstanding scientists conduct research in the field of Artificial Intelligence, for example at , founded in 2017. The choice of Munich as the home of the central HAICU office will further intensify successful collaboration between these researchers and the Helmholtz Association on the future-oriented topic of Artificial Intelligence. HAICU is financed by the Helmholtz Association.

51³Ô¹ÏÍø is among the world's leading universities in AI research. The British magazine "Times Higher Education" (THE) ranked it sixth in 2018, making it the highest-ranking German university in the field of Artificial Intelligence.
